Lauren thought she heard Carlos wrong. "He what?"
Rudy frowned in disbelief, staring at them both as rain tapped the kitchen window. "Stuart had the only map?"
Carlos reached for his pipe across the table, nodding briskly. "Brielle didn't need a map to the pit; just the island with his own separate cache, and this blasted diary." He lit the pipe and puffed irritably, teeth clamped tightly on the stem. "But that was a valuable artifact. Up in smoke."
Lauren sighed. "He was only trying to prove a point with Stuart."
"Yes, yes." He turned back to the diary, setting the pipe in the ashtray Rudy had provided. "Stuart is impressed with Brielle's gesture of good faith and proposes a toast. This leads to quite a drinking bout. After Stuart had retuned to his own cabin, aided by Ensign Williams, Brielle and Williams prepare two chests.
"Now take this down carefully, Lauren." He read on silently for a long moment. "Okay. No size is given on the chests, simply two chests. He and Williams put two million pounds sterling in canvas bags. These they put into the chests. Ten natives are used to transport the chests by cart to what Brielle calls his private depository. The crew has been given a holiday and free license on the ship's store of liquor earlier that day. His black flag has been raised to discourage mainlanders. . ." He stopped reading and raised an eyebrow at Lauren. "A black flag."
