The hospital instruments blinked and beeped, their low indicator LEDS making pinpoints of colored light in the room. Mina was facing the window when she awoke from the six-day bout of unconsciousness. The broad rectangle of light was only a blurry form of gray.
Eventually the antiseptic smells of the room sharpened, and she blinked. Her vision focused. The window blind was pulled mostly to one side. A figure sat in the chair near it, his elbow propped on the armrest.
For a moment she watched him, appearing to almost half-doze in the room’s dim lighting.
She knew every line of his face, his neck, how he’d gotten that scar on his chest. . .
Except those were old memories cast in a dream world. Now, she wasn’t so sure.
And it wasn’t Edvard.
