“Why didn’t you look for her?” Edvard asked Kage, his tone holding no respect now. “You knew she was gone.”
Mina looked with shock from Edvard to the Unrecht.
“Like I said,” Kage reminded, “you wanted a reward.”
Edvard frowned at him. “You just let her wander lost over a whole continent because you somehow knew I’d take her home for a reward?”
“You did.” Kage’s hand rested at his side, and now his cloak fell over his thigh. A long sword was worn at his hip. “You wanted something in return.”
Mina felt Edvard’s unease.
“I want nothing in return,” he said, turning Mina back to Neito. He grabbed Makka’s lead rope, his attention still on Kage.
“Sure you do.” Kage shrugged, some of the hard grin leaving his face as he moved.
Edvard shook his head. “I want nothing. Yuila’s home. That’s enough.” He came around Neito and helped Mina into the saddle.
“At least recompense for your mare.”
Mina had just settled in the saddle when Kage said it. Her attention shot to the man.
Edvard paused, looking past Neito’s head. “What do you know about that?”
