Lauren awoke shortly before the Würzburg stop was announced. The compartment door slid shut behind Reuben as she looked to it. In the low light of the reading lamp, she could see the duffle bag unzipped on the opposite seat. She didn't even entertain the thought of searching for her passport. It wouldn't be there, nor would anything else useful.

She sighed, settling against the window as a light rain sprinkled outside. For a frustrated moment she debated, alternately chiding and encouraging herself.

A moment later, she made her way down the narrow train aisle way. She took a deep breath and stopped, looking at the block lettering on the door before her. She knocked and then let herself in.

Reuben was standing at the sink of the single occupancy facility. His shirt, holster, and vest lay on the small restroom vanity. The sleazy print shirt was in the wastebasket, bloodstained. She locked the door behind her as he glanced at her.

"Down the hall," he said. "And make sure the door lock works."

She didn't like the color below his chest to one side of his ribs. "What a perfect shade of plum."

He turned back to the sink and soaked a folded paper towel. "If you're going to get catty, go back and sit down."
