The next day arrived bright and still, almost as if to mock the night's calamities. Rudy and Carlos were in the kitchen when Lauren came down. Rudy was swearing liberally as Carlos explained about the blueberry tea and fire. The lightkeeper was furious when he saw the bandage on Lauren's hand.
Now Saul Clemens' name did come up.
By the time Lauren cleared breakfast, Maruso had retuned from refueling the Jeep. She warmed him a plate of waffles and sausage, listening to Rudy's verbal barrage about the Clemens' family. Maruso helped her dissuade Rudy and Carlos' collected sense of vengeance, reminding them that Saul may not be responsible for the incident, and that the police had not been notified. Maruso's last statement made Carlos nearly explode.
"This is supposed to be undertaken in an inconspicuous manner, Captain," the curator said tightly. "Bringing the authorities into it would expose everything we've worked for these last few weeks. And she won't go back." He pointed a bony finger as Lauren. "Yes, I need her, but—"
"I didn't say she should have called the police," Maruso debated as Carlos gained speed. "I only said that we don't know for certain that last night had anything to do with the Clemens at all. And, without police cooperation, we probably not find out who it was."
Lauren did not like the formal atmosphere developing in the kitchen. The cheery waffles and sausages had done little to lift anyone's mood, but at least the maple syrup dispelled the heavy blueberry smell still hanging in the room that morning.
"We should be going," she said. "Lewis wants to get parts for the light before the Tattoo finale," she told Carlos, ignoring his fading temper. "And we want to get back in time to fix it. Are you sure you don't want us to stay?"
He contemplated his half-empty cup of instant coffee. "I'm fine."
Moments later Lauren and Maruso were in the Jeep on the small road to the main. After a few moments of silence, she turned to him. "Carlos has been grouchy all morning. Rudy, too. They must have a hangover from the tea." She sighed and looked out the window. "I thought Carlos was really going to make m go back."
He nodded, looking at her hand. "They've got good cause to be mad after what happened."
He turned the Jeep onto the main road toward the coast. She watched the brush and pockmarked shoreline pass by
"Do you think it was Clemens?" she asked without looking at him.
"Which one?"
